Editing Videos (4)

View category →

To increase or decrease the speed of your movie, you can adjust the frame rate, also referred to” as frames per second (fps).

Below the left-hand playback window in the SAM Animation software or myCreate app, you will find a horizontal slider. You also have the option to type in the exact frame rate in the adjacent text box.

The default frame rate is set to 10fps.

Remember: the higher the frames per second, the faster your video will play!

Yes, you can add text, drawings, or other simple shapes (lines, rectangles, and circles) to your image(s). First, choose a frame on which to draw. Then click the “Edit Frame” button to the left of the playhead controls. (You can also double click on the frame you want to edit). A screen with paint toolbox menu on the left side will appear. Select the icon of your choice and begin editing your frame!

When you are finished editing, press the done button (bottom right) to return to the main screen, and your edits will appear on the previously selected frame.

FAQs: HUE Animation (10)

View category →

HUE Animation (formerly SAM Animation) is a simple-to-use application that captures a series of still images from a webcam and plays them back as an animated stop motion movie. It also includes tools to help you to add sound, edit individual frames and export content from your movie projects.

HUE Animation can be purchased through our online store, through Amazon worldwide or through major educational suppliers. It’s available bundled with the HUE USB camera or as a standalone download, and there are volume licensing options for schools.

If you need help finding a vendor in your area, please contact us for further assistance.

FAQs: HUE HD Camera (65)

View category →

These instructions apply to AMCap, the optional camera software available with the original HUE HD Camera. If you’re using different software, please check the publisher’s website for instructions. Our HUE Animation and HUE Intuition software packages (sold separately) have built-in flip/mirror features.

1. Launching the software

First, open the software from the Start Menu. You might have to click All Programs first. Windows 8 users can search for the application by name: HUE HD Camera.

HueHDCamerastartmenu

When the software opens it should show a live preview from your camera. If it’s missing, select the camera from the Devices menu first.

SelectHUEfromDevices

If the window is still blank, check that the camera isn’t open in any other software at the same time and ensure that Preview is selected in the Options menu.

PreviewLiveVideo

2. Accessing the camera settings

Select Video Capture Filter from the Options menu. You’ll be taken straight to the screen you need with the camera settings.

There are two boxes at the top of the screen: Image Mirror (horizontal flip) and Image Flip (vertical flip). Select the options you’d like to use and click OK. The live video feed will automatically refresh and start using your new settings.

FlipControls

If the options are greyed out, the system may be streaming the video in MJPG format which blocks the extra controls. To check, click Cancel and select Video Capture Pin from the Options menu.

PreviewLiveVideo

Locate the Color Space/Compression setting as pictured below. If you change that to YUY2 mode and click OK, the additional options in the Video Capture Filter screen will become available and allow you to tune the image.

VideoCapturePin

Note for Mac users

If you’re using Mac OS X, the only way to access additional controls for the camera at this time is to install a third party application such as iGlasses.

Some Apple software automatically flips the image to make live chat more intuitive. For recording videos where it’s important that the image isn’t flipped, we recommend the free version of QuickTime included in OS X 10.6 and later.

HUE is completely plug and play so it’s not necessary to install any camera drivers. Windows users can view and record the video stream using free software such as AMCap, while Mac users can access the camera through QuickTime and Photo Booth.

If you’re using Windows and want to install the optional drivers for features such as digital zoom and interpolation, you can download the installation package here.

If you have an older model which requires additional software, please see this FAQ for help.

The camera is also compatible with our HUE Intuition software (sold separately) which is supported on Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8) and Mac OS X 10.6 and later.

Our cameras use manual focus, which means you have to turn the ring around the camera’s lens until the picture is sharp. This means that if you move the camera closer or farther away, the picture may become blurry until you turn the ring again to bring the image back into focus.

If you’d like to know more about manual focus and why we’ve chosen to use it for all of our cameras, please read this blog post on the subject.

If you’d like to install the drivers, a technical limitation of Windows means that the camera must be connected to each individual computer at the time of installation so there’s no network-deployable version. However, HUE is completely plug and play so the drivers are completely optional.

If you find you need the camera viewing tool from the driver package but not the drivers, you can download a standalone executable for this which can be copied across your network silently. Silent network installation is also planned for our HUE Intuition software (sold separately).

Our animation software (available separately or as part of HUE Animation Studio) can be installed over a network as required. Please contact us if you need any additional information.

The light on the camera head will only be illuminated when the camera is streaming video.

If it isn’t lighting up, fully quit the camera software you’re using so that it does not show up in your Dock or Taskbar. Then try opening it again, making sure that the camera isn’t in use in any other applications which might be running in the background. USB cameras will only work in one application at a time, and sometimes even web browsers can reserve the video stream with certain plugins installed.

Please also make sure that the camera is directly connected to your computer, not to a USB hub or through a port in the keyboard. If you change the USB port the camera is connected to, please make sure that the software is fully quit as above and then reopen it after reconnecting the device.

HUE Intuition users don’t need to close the software. Simply changing to another tab and then back again will reset the camera connection.

If you receive a warning message upon launching SAM/HUE that recommends you to update your video card, then you can follow the steps below to update:

1) Find out who is the manufacturer of your video card by going to Control Panel –> Display Settings –> Appearance –> Advanced. Here you should see some tabs, one of which will have the name of your video card manufacturer.

You can also download and run an executable that will identify your card type and prompt you where you can download the latest update here.

2) The video cards are usually Intel, ATI Radeon (AMD), or nVidia, and each of these manufacturers have websites where it’s easy to detect and download the right driver update — and it’s all FREE!
ATI Radeon: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
Intel: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/
nVidia: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Once you’ve downloaded and installed the appropriate driver, you should be ready to start creating!

To record audio:

  1. There are four tabs on the top of the camera view area. Click the microphone tab (second from the left). A screen with two bars will show up. The top bar represents the sound level and the lower bar represents the current state of recording. Underneath these two bars there are two other icons: a record button and an audio import button.
  2. Click the record button (on the left, with a big red circle) and the recording bar will turn red. This means the software is recording sound.
  3. To stop recording, just press the recording button again and the recorded audio will appear on the movie automatically.

To import music, click on the Audio tab (denoted as a microphone), click on the icon with a musical note and a downward pointing arrow. Select the file you wish to import, and click the “Import Audio File” button.  You can also go to File–>Import to bring an audio file into your project.

There are a couple of ways to edit your audio clip:

  1. To shorten the length of an existing audio clip, hover the mouse over the end of the clip.
  2. The cursor will change from an arrow to a line with a perpendicular arrow pointing inward – toward the audio clip.
  3. Click and drag to change the length of the audio.

Additionally, you can lengthen a previously shortened clip using the same procedure, only by dragging to make the clip longer.  In the “Manage Timeline” section, there is an icon with a music note symbol, a picture, and a double-ended arrow. This “Fit to Audio” feature allows you with one click of the mouse adjust the frame rate of the film so that the images will last the exact length of the audio clip. In other words, the audio clip length determines how long the movie will be, and the frames will be adjusted to fit that duration.

In the free version of SAM Animation and the myCreate iPad app, you are limited to just one audio track.

However, in the full version of SAM, you can add additional tracks of audio, so a project can have narration with background music. These tracks will appear in the timeline and can be selected and adjusted for appropriate placement and length.

Requirements for HUE, SAM and myCreate (5)

If you are running the HUE (formerly SAM Animation) software, you can use the webcam built into your computer or a separate external webcam that plugs into a USB port. We suggest the HUE HD camera with the software: http://icreatetoeducate.com/shop/hue-usb-camera-2/

If you are wanting to use myCreate on the iPad, the camera built into the iPad 2 or 3 can be used – no external USB webcam required!

We recommend webcams for the HUE/SAM software that are driverless, but please do not hesitate to contact us if you need recommendations on camera types.

HUE (formerly SAM Animation) runs on Mac OSX 10.5 and above, and Windows XP, 7, and 8. We unfortunately cannot support Mac OSX 10.4, Windows Vista, or Linux.

HUE (formerly SAM Animation) only works on a PC or Mac computer. However, we do have an iPad, iPhone and iTouch app that is based on SAM called myCreate, available for $4.99 from the app store. The app allows for volume education pricing at 50% discount for a purchase of 20 or more.

As of right now, we do not have plans to offer the app for Android tablets, Android phones, Windows tablets, or Chromebooks. However, we are looking to release a web-based version of myCreate towards the end of 2014.

The myCreate app has a similar look and feel as the HUE Animation software, without the editing capabilities. However, movies can be created with the app, exported to a movie file, and then imported into SAM Animation for final editing.

myCreate does offer options to share direct to YouTube, Facebook, and Vimeo as well.

If you have the latest Mac operating system – Maverick – there are restrictions automatically set that will allow only software registered with Apple.

In the latest release of HUE (formerly SAM Animation) for Mac (December2013), we have updated the software to include the registered certificates by Apple, so if you have Maverick, you simply need to log in to your iCreate account and select the Mac download file from the Downloads sidebar.

If you continue to see an error preventing install, go into Settings on your computer and make sure that the option for allowing applications from BOTH the app store and as approved by Apple is selected.

Our app – myCreate – works with iOS 6.1+ on the iPad 2 or 3, iPhone, and iTouch. You can download the app directly from the app store here.

HUE/SAM Animation only works with cameras without flash memory, such as digital cameras, video cameras, and flip cameras.

HUE/SAM is designed to work with webcams and some document cameras with a USB connection.  These cameras are capable of real time video streaming.  If you are testing a camera on your computer, make sure that your computer has the correct driver software to run the camera, although we recommend webcams without drivers.

Non web-cam digital or video cameras will not work directly with SAM. However, it is possible to take pictures with a digital camera or video with a video camera and import the picture or video.  See “How to import images in SAM” for instructions.

To import image or video files into your SAM Animation project, go to File –> Import and select the appropriate file(s). You can import more than one at once by holding the shift key and selecting all, but we recommend only importing a few at a time so as not to overload your computer’s memory.

Note that the myCreate app currently does not have the ability to import images or video, but this is a feature we look to add in the future.

Before you import a video or image, remember to note where your cursor is on the video timeline, as the images/video will drop in to the right of the cursor.

If you import a video, the video will be a clip of images, which you can separate using the clip to image button in the edit timeline tab.

The image in the right-hand side of your screen appears blurry because of a feature called “onion-skinning”, which is a helpful way for animators to see the position of their props in the previous frame, in order to align the props appropriately prior to capturing the next frame.

The image taken previously is partially transparent on purpose to give you an opportunity to actually “see” both images.

The onion-skinning button is located just under the right-hand camera streaming window.

You can turn onion-skinning on and off and move the actual onion-skinned frame by using the appropriate arrow control buttons.

Saving and Sharing Videos (10)

If you have created projects with SAM Animation in the past, and have updated to the latest software version of HUE Animation, then in order to open older projects with .sam file extension, you made need to change the extension to .hue.

You can go to File–Export …

To save your project so you can go back to work on it later, go to File–>Save.  If you are done with your project and want to export it as a stand-alone movie file to share, go to File–>Export.

By default, HUE/SAM saves your project in a “SAM Animation” or “HUE Animation” folder, which is located in your “Documents” folder on a Mac or “My Documents” folder on a PC.

If you lost your pictures in a HUE/SAM Animation project, you can look in the project folder under the sub-folder “Images” to see all images that you have taken.

You can then re-import these images into your old project or a new one by going to File –> Import.

To activate your software, you will need your license key or HUE code.

Finding your HUE code

  • If you purchased HUE Animation Studio with The HUE Book of Animation, check the back cover of the book for your HUE code. It should be printed just above the barcode.
  • If you have an older version of HUE Animation with a turtle on the front of the box, there should be an activation sheet inside the kit which contains your HUE code and instructions for using it. If you don’t have an activation sheet, check the paper wallet which holds the CD as well.
  • If your copy of HUE Animation Studio is even older than this or your code is missing, please contact us with your original order details so that we can help.

If you purchased your license digitally or registered a HUE code online before November 2014, you will have received an email with a long license key. Please check your email for this key or use our Lost License form to retrieve your details. You can also view your licenses by logging in to your online account.

Activating the software

1. Install HUE Animation using the instructions for Windows or Mac OS X.

2. Launch the HUE Animation software. If you can’t find it on your system, check this guide. The first time you open the software, you should see the following screen.

activation

3. Enter your email address and HUE code in the area marked with a red box, then click the Activate button. It’s very important to use the correct email address so please check your details carefully.

Note: If you’ve already registered your software before or have a long license key, use the boxes labelled Have a License Key? instead.

4. The software will take a few seconds to confirm your details, then your software will be ready for use.

Please keep your license details in a safe place as you might need them again if you upgrade your computer.

Choosing a Workspace

If it’s the first time you’re using the animation software, you’ll also be asked to choose a Workspace folder. This is where your animation projects will be saved. The Default location will be best for most users.
