The First LEGO League for Animation: Scinemation

The First LEGO League for Animation: Scinemation

One of the most impressive worldwide non-sports competitions for kids is the FIRST LEGO League. Impressive from both participation and standardization levels. It’s our model for what we hope to build out as the first worldwide animation competition, which has been pioneered by Singapore for three straight years.

Scinemation – the blend of our two favorite things in one fun word – was debuted in November 2011 by Singapore Science Center. Dr. Brian Gravel and I were fortunate enough to judge, and I must say it was one of my favorite iCreate moments. There we were – literally a 2 person bootstrapped startup – flown halfway around the world to watch 400+ students of all ages dedicate 3 full days to storyboarding, animating, and presenting with our SAM Animation software. The engagement, creativity, and excitement in the room were overwhelmingly rewarding for us.

What’s even more rewarding, however, is the fact that we just completed the third straight year of the competition with the same level of participation and imagination. We’re thrilled that the Science Center continues to dedicate the time, energy, and resources that it takes to carry-out such an event. And, we hope, this only marks the beginning as we work with similar organizations around the world to carry the Scinemation torch!
